About This 11-Day Kenya Safari and Beach Holiday

The 11-Day Wild Luxury Kenya Safari: From Savannah to Sea is one of the most complete and beautifully paced Kenya safari and beach holiday packages available, designed for travelers who want to experience the very best of this extraordinary country without compromise. Over 11 days, you will move through three of Kenya’s most iconic destinations, beginning in Nairobi, flying into the exclusive Ol Kinyei Conservancy in the Maasai Mara for private game drives, Maasai cultural encounters, and bush sundowners, before continuing to the vast red-earth wilderness of Tsavo East National Park with its legendary red-dusted elephants, waterhole wildlife viewing, and sweeping views toward Mount Kilimanjaro.

Each destination has been chosen not just for its wildlife credentials but for the quality of experience it delivers at every hour of the day. Flights connect the destinations efficiently, and for those who prefer the scenic route, Kenya’s SGR train journey from Nairobi to Mombasa is a wonderful alternative that turns the transit itself into a memorable part of the adventure.

The final chapter of this Kenya safari and coastal tour lands you on the white sand beaches of Diani, one of East Africa’s most celebrated coastlines, where warm Indian Ocean waters, swaying palms, and a guided tour of historic Mombasa Old Town round out a journey that has delivered everything from big game to ancient history to the pure joy of doing absolutely nothing on a beautiful beach.

Included throughout are all game drives in a private 4×4 safari vehicle, bush breakfasts, cultural interactions with a local Maasai community including a visit to a community school, and the warm, expert support of Back to the Source Tours at every stage.

This is Magical Kenya at its finest, three distinct worlds in eleven unforgettable days.

Aerial vs. Train

This itinerary has been designed with select regional flights due to the distances between destinations, allowing you to maximize your time in the bush and spend less time in transit.

For travelers who prefer not to fly on certain routes, there is also the option of taking Kenya’s scenic train journey between Nairobi and Mombasa. This rail experience offers a comfortable and memorable alternative, with the chance to enjoy changing landscapes along the way. For added comfort, VIP or Premium Class seating is an excellent choice, providing a more spacious and relaxed way to travel while keeping the journey itself part of the safari experience.

We are happy to tailor the logistics based on your travel style, comfort preferences, and schedule, ensuring that every part of your journey feels intentional and well considered.

Day 1 – Arrival in Nairobi, Kenya | Gateway to the Wild

Your Kenya safari adventure begins the moment you land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where a dedicated Back to the Source Tours representative will be waiting to welcome you and coordinate your private transfer to your Nairobi hotel. Nairobi is one of the only capital cities in the world with a national park on its doorstep, and it carries that rare combination of international energy and immediate access to nature with remarkable ease.

Check in, settle into your room, and take the time to recover from your international journey. In the afternoon, optional wildlife experiences are available including the world-famous Giraffe Centre, the deeply moving David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage, or a morning game drive in Nairobi National Park where lions, rhinos, and buffaloes roam against a city skyline backdrop. This evening, your group gathers for a welcome dinner, the perfect opportunity to meet fellow travelers, review the journey ahead, and begin the experience with energy and intention.

11-Day Kenya Safari | Maasai Mara, Tsavo and Diani Beach

Day 2 – Scenic Flight to Maasai Mara and First Game Drive | Ol Kinyei Conservancy

After breakfast, transfer to Wilson Airport for your scenic light aircraft flight to the Maasai Mara, with breathtaking aerial views over Kenya’s changing landscapes before the golden plains of Ol Kinyei Conservancy appear below. The safari begins the moment you land. You will be met by your camp team and head directly into the conservancy, where wildlife sightings often begin before anyone has fully adjusted their camera settings. Ol Kinyei is a private, community-owned conservation area where tourism directly supports Maasai landowners and long-term wildlife protection. This model matters deeply, and you feel it in the quality of the landscape, the exclusivity of the experience, and the complete absence of vehicle congestion.

After lunch and time to settle into your intimate solar-powered camp, head out on your first game drive across the Mara’s sweeping golden plains, looking for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and wildebeest before returning for a bush sundowner as the day closes over the savannah. The Maasai Mara rarely believes in subtlety, and this is a very strong opening.

Day 3 – Full Day Safari in the Maasai Mara | Dawn Game Drive and Maasai Cultural Experience

Today begins before sunrise, when the conservancy is at its most alive and the air still holds the cool hush of early morning. Rise for a dawn game drive in an open 4×4 vehicle, timed perfectly for the golden hours when predators are active, light is exceptional, and the plains feel entirely yours. Because Ol Kinyei is a private conservancy, off-road driving is fully permitted, giving your expert guide the freedom to position the vehicle with precision and maximize every extraordinary sighting.

Later in the day, the experience shifts from wildlife to culture with a guided bush walk with Maasai warriors, offering a completely different perspective on the landscape shaped by generations of observation, knowledge, and lived connection to the land. You will also visit a local Maasai boma, where traditional architecture, vibrant beadwork, pastoral customs, and warm community life come together in a genuinely meaningful exchange. A visit to a local community school gives you further insight into the lives of the people who share this extraordinary landscape. Back at camp, the evening ends beside the fire under a sky so full of stars it feels almost too good to be real.

Day 4 – Moving Deeper into Ol Kinyei Conservancy | New Vantage Point, Same Wild Heart

After a final morning game drive from your current camp, transfer within Ol Kinyei Conservancy to your second accommodation. Staying in two different properties within the same conservancy is a deliberate and rewarding design choice. It gives you a deeper sense of place, introduces a fresh vantage point across the same wildlife-rich ecosystem, and allows the Maasai Mara to reveal itself with greater depth rather than as a quick highlight reel.

The afternoon continues with more time in the field, and the evening settles into the particular magic that only comes from knowing a landscape well enough to feel genuinely at home in it. This is private conservancy safari in Kenya at its most thoughtful and rewarding.

Day 5 – Final Morning in the Maasai Mara and Transfer to Tsavo East

Enjoy a final morning activity in the conservancy before bidding farewell to the Maasai Mara and boarding your scenic light aircraft for the next chapter of the journey. The transition is dramatic and wonderful. The lush green grasslands of the Mara give way to volcanic formations, red earth, and a landscape of impressive scale and ancient atmosphere that feels entirely different in the best possible way.

11-Day Kenya Safari | Maasai Mara, Tsavo and Diani Beach

Few Kenya safari itineraries offer such a vivid and rewarding contrast in such a short span of time. On arrival, transfer to your unique safari lodge in Tsavo East National Park, one of the most distinctive land mass in Kenya, built on stilts above active waterholes that regularly attract large numbers of animals. From the elevated viewing decks and underground observation bunker, wildlife encounters continue long after the game drive ends.

Elephant herds are frequent visitors to the waterhole, and on clear days Mount Kilimanjaro appears on the southern horizon in all its snow-capped glory. Settle in, enjoy dinner, and let Tsavo’s scale and silence work their magic.

Day 6 – Full Day in the Wildlife Reserve | Final Game Drive & Close Encounters at the Waterhole

Today is your last full day at the resort, and it is built around one thing: making every remaining hour count.

The day begins early with a full game drive through the reserve and into the greater Tsavo ecosystem. With over 50 species of large mammals and 300 species of birds across 28,000 acres of rolling savanna and woodland, today you move through it properly, with picnic meals in the field so that no time is spent retracing your steps. Your guide knows this terrain deeply. The pace is patient, attentive, and focused entirely on what the bush is doing today.

Game drives cover both the private reserve and the adjacent ecosystem, taking in vast open plains, riverine woodland, and the rocky outcrops and grasslands that make this one of Kenya’s most rewarding wildlife landscapes. Expect elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions, leopards, zebras, waterbuck, and a richness of birdlife that rewards anyone who slows down long enough to look.

Return to the resort in the afternoon for what is arguably the most extraordinary wildlife encounter this entire journey has to offer.

The Underground Wildlife Hide

Beneath the resort, an underground tunnel leads guests directly to a ground-level bunker positioned at the water’s edgeof the main waterhole. Ground-level windows provide unbelievably close, yet completely safe, access to animals as they arrive to drink. You are not watching from a deck or a vehicle. You are at eye level with whatever walks in.

During dry seasons, large herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and antelopes gather at the waterhole, sometimes trailed by lions. Guests have recorded more than 60 elephants and a hundred zebra at the waterhole simultaneously. From inside the hide you see their feet at eye level, hear them drinking, feel the ground shift as a herd approaches. It is a category of wildlife encounter that simply does not exist anywhere else on this itinerary, and not something most safari guests ever experience.

The resort’s unique stilt architecture means wildlife can be observed from every level at the same time: from the hide at ground level, from the elevated walkways between rooms, from the restaurant while eating, and from the bar terrace a level higher, all overlooking the same waterhole.

As the light fades, the waterhole is floodlit. Large numbers of animals continue to arrive after dark, giving a rare opportunity to watch wildlife up close in their natural habitat without ever leaving the resort. This is your final night here, and it has a tendency to be the one guests remember longest.

Day 7 – Fly to Mombasa and Arrival at Diani Beach | The Coast Begins

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your coastal flight to Mombasa, and watch Kenya change character beautifully from above. The interior’s red-earth plains and dry acacia woodlands soften gradually into lush coastal vegetation before the Indian Ocean appears in striking shades of turquoise and deep blue. On arrival in Mombasa, transfer south by road toward Diani Beach.

Kenya beach canoeing

Check into your Diani Beach resort, where the next chapter shifts from classic Kenya wildlife safari to tropical ease without losing a single beat. Diani is celebrated for its long arc of white sand, calm reef-protected waters, and the nearby coastal forest that shelters the endangered Angolan colobus monkey. This evening, settle into the coast with a dhow sundowner experience, fresh sea air, and the kind of sunset over the Indian Ocean that makes the entire journey feel complete.

Day 8 – Diani Beach | Your First Full Day on the Coast

After a final morning game drive and breakfast, transfer to the private airstrip for your short coastal flight to Mombasa. The sanctuary sits just 30 minutes by air from the coast, making this one of the most seamless bush-to-ocean transitions in all of Kenya. In the time it takes to finish one last cup of coffee watching elephants at the waterhole, you are over the Indian Ocean.

On arrival in Mombasa, continue south by road toward Diani Beach and the first unmistakable breath of warm, salt-heavy ocean air. The road winds through coastal forest before the white sand and turquoise water of Diani open ahead.

Your beachfront resort with tropical gardens and a genuine coastal forest, has direct access to both Diani Beach and the quieter Galu Beach to the south. Enjoy several lounge-type and infinity swimming pools, several restaurants and bar themes, full-service spas, and evening entertainment giving the stay a depth and scale that most beach resorts simply cannot match. This package has been costed on ocean view rooms, which means your private balcony or terrace looks directly out to the Indian Ocean.

This evening, settle into the coast. The kind of sunset that makes the entire safari feel complete lands right on schedule.

Included daily leisure Activities:

  • Pool aerobics, beach volleyball, shuffleboard, archery, table tennis, billiards, bocce, darts, and yoga, organized daily by resort activities team
  • Full use of swimming pools at your resort
  • Nature trail walks through a coastal forest
  • Live animation shows nightly
  • Nightly disco nights with vibrant music and on selected days live bands
  • Supervised kids’ activities for ages 4 to 12 daily
  • Kids’ disco nightly with the Jambo Team

Day 9 – Diani Beach | Your Day, Your Pace

Your second full day on the coast is intentionally open. Relax on the beach, swim in the warm reef-protected waters of the Indian Ocean, take a morning spa treatment, or simply settle into a beach lounger and watch the dhows drift past the reef as the light turns gold. There is nothing wrong with that plan, and the Indian Ocean will not judge you for it.

For those who want to explore, the south coast has an extraordinary range of experiences within easy reach, from coral reefs and island excursions to sacred forests, historic ruins, and the kind of coastal adventure you did not know you needed until you are standing on the beach deciding.

Back to the Source Tours can arrange any activity below at our negotiated rates with trusted local operators, often well below walk-in pricing. Alternatively, the hotel Guest Relations desk works with the same service providers and can book everything on arrival. Although some activities must be booked in advance like skydiving, so let us know what interest you and we will check. The choice is yours, and we make either route effortless.

Day 10 and 11 – Return to Nairobi and International Departure

After breakfast and check-out on Day 10, transfer by private vehicle to Mombasa Moi International Airport for your flight back to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where you will connect onward to your international departure. Back to the Source Tours will coordinate all final logistics and ensure every traveler is fully supported through check-in and departure.

For guests with later international flights, day rooms in Nairobi can be arranged so you can rest, freshen up, and make the most of your final hours in Kenya. Whether you spend those last hours at the Giraffe Centre, browsing the city’s artisan markets, or simply enjoying a long lunch with your fellow travelers, Nairobi knows how to send you home well.

What you carry with you is more than a collection of beautiful images. It is the feeling of the Maasai Mara at dawn, the extraordinary scale of Tsavo East, the warmth of Mombasa Old Town, and the pure joy of the Indian Ocean at sunset, woven together into one of the finest Kenya safari and beach holiday experiencesavailable anywhere.

Best Time for This Kenya Safari

This 11-day Kenya safari covers three distinct ecosystems, the Maasai Mara, Tsavo East, and the Indian Ocean coast at Diani Beach, each with its own seasonal patterns.

July to October (Great Migration peak): The most spectacular time for the Maasai Mara. Wildebeest river crossings at the Mara River occur from July through September, coinciding with peak dry season. Predator sightings at Ol Kinyei Conservancy are excellent. Tsavo East waterholes draw large concentrations of wildlife. Diani Beach is warm and dry. Book 6 to 9 months in advance for this period.

January to February (short dry season): Excellent game viewing across all three destinations. The Mara is quieter than peak season with fewer vehicles. Tsavo East waterhole activity is outstanding as this is the driest period. Diani Beach is at its sunniest and warmest. A strong alternative to peak season with more competitive pricing.

June (early dry season): Ol Kinyei Conservancy and Tsavo East are excellent. Wildebeest begin arriving in the southern Mara in June. Coastal weather is mild. A good entry point before peak season pricing applies.

March to May (long rainy season): Landscapes are lush and green across all destinations. Game viewing at Tsavo East remains strong as animals are drawn to waterholes even in the rains. The Maasai Mara is verdant and birding is exceptional. Diani Beach can experience some rainfall. Lowest pricing of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does this 11-day Kenya safari cost?

This 11-day Kenya safari starts from $4,850 USD per person (group of 12) to $5,935 USD per person (2 travelers). All internal flights are included. No gorilla permits are required on this tour. A 40% deposit is required to confirm your booking. Contact Back to the Source Tours for a personalized quote based on your travel dates and group size.

What is Ol Kinyei Conservancy and why is it different from the main Maasai Mara reserve?

Ol Kinyei Conservancy is a private, community-owned conservation area adjacent to the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem. Unlike the main reserve, Ol Kinyei has no vehicle congestion, allows full off-road driving, and directly supports Maasai landowners through tourism revenue. Your guide can position the vehicle anywhere for optimal sightings rather than staying on tracks. This is what makes the Maasai Mara experience on this tour exceptional.

What is the underground wildlife hide at Tsavo East?

The underground hide at your Tsavo East lodge is a ground-level bunker positioned directly at the waterhole’s edge. Ground-level windows place you at eye level with elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and lions as they come to drink. During peak dry season, guests have recorded over 60 elephants and 100 zebras simultaneously at the waterhole. The waterhole is floodlit at night extending wildlife viewing after dark. It is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on this entire itinerary.

Can we take the SGR train instead of flying on some routes?

Yes. The SGR Madaraka Express train between Nairobi and Mombasa is a comfortable and scenic alternative to flying on that leg of the journey. VIP or Premium Class is recommended for the experience. If you choose the train option your per-person rate is reduced as the flight cost is removed. Back to the Source Tours tailors the logistics based on your preference.

What is the Diani Beach accommodation like?

Your Diani Beach resort is all-inclusive and beachfront with direct access to both Diani and the quieter Galu Beach to the south. The package is costed on ocean view rooms with a private balcony or terrace facing the Indian Ocean. The resort has multiple pools, restaurants, bars, spa facilities, daily activities, and nightly entertainment. The nearby coastal forest shelters the endangered Angolan colobus monkey.

Are all flights included?

Yes. All internal flights in Kenya are included in your tour price: the Wilson Airport to Ol Kinyei Conservancy flight on Day 2, the Maasai Mara to Tsavo East flight on Day 5, the Tsavo East to Mombasa coastal flight on Day 7, and the Mombasa to Nairobi return flight on Days 10 and 11. International flights to and from Kenya are not included.

Do I need a Kenya visa?

Most nationalities require a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Apply online at etakenya.go.ke before travel. Back to the Source Tours advises on visa and ETA requirements for your specific nationality.

What optional activities are available on this tour?

Optional activities include the Giraffe Centre ($15 per person), David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage ($65 per person), and a hot air balloon safari over the Maasai Mara with champagne bush breakfast (from $450 per person). In Tsavo optional activities include bush breakfasts, sundowners at Kudu Point, and the Shamba Kitchen cooking experience. At Diani Beach, activities include snorkeling, diving, deep-sea fishing, and island excursions. Back to the Source Tours can arrange all optional activities at negotiated rates.

Pair This Tour with More of East Africa

This 11-day Kenya safari is one of the most complete Kenya itineraries available. For travelers who want to go further, Back to the Source Tours makes it easy to extend before or after your journey.

Add Uganda gorilla trekking (3 to 6 days): Combine this Kenya safari with mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Gorilla trekking permits are $825 USD per person and must be booked in advance.
