The 11-Day Great Uganda Escape is the perfect blend of iconic wildlife, raw natural power, and deeply human cultural encounters, all wrapped in upper mid-range to high-end comfort across Uganda’s most extraordinary destinations. This journey takes you from the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe northward to Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch, where you track southern white rhinos on foot and paddle through Lugogo Swamp in search of the rare Shoebill Stork, before continuing to Murchison Falls National Park for thrilling game drives across the northern savannah, a visit to the breathtaking Top of the Falls, and a Nile River boat safari gliding past hippos, crocodiles, and an astonishing variety of waterbirds. Every day in the north delivers a different dimension of Uganda’s wild beauty, paced thoughtfully and experienced in genuine comfort.

The second half of the journey shifts into something even more rare and moving. A scenic flight delivers you to the ancient highlands of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last places on earth where you can stand face to face with wild mountain gorillas (minimum age 15 years). Africa’s wild heart, delivered in elegance

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe, Uganda | Welcome to the Pearl of Africa

Your Uganda safari adventure begins the moment you land at Entebbe International Airport, beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Victoria. A dedicated Back to the Source Tours representative will be there to welcome you, assist with arrival formalities, and transfer you privately to your hotel. Once settled in, you will receive a personal briefing covering your full itinerary, key highlights, and everything you need to know before the journey begins. Enjoy a relaxed dinner at your hotel or a recommended spot nearby, rest well, and let the anticipation build. Tomorrow the wild begins.

Days 2 and 3 – Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch | Rhino Trekking on Foot and Shoebill Canoe Excursion

After breakfast, travel north toward Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch, the only place in Uganda where you can track wild southern white rhinos entirely on foot. You will spend two nights at the ranch in a comfortable lodge set on expansive open grounds, where mornings begin with rhinos, antelope, and other wildlife grazing just beyond your veranda. The property itself is a destination, featuring a swimming pool, game room, cigar lounge, and a two-level restaurant with sweeping views over the savannah, offering both indoor and outdoor dining that makes every meal an experience.

The centerpiece of your stay is a guided rhino trek with expert armed rangers, moving through open grassland at a respectful distance as these powerful, prehistoric-looking giants go about their day. Your ranger will share the remarkable story of Uganda’s rhino reintroduction program and the conservation effort that has rebuilt the population from zero to over 40 animals. It is an unhurried, deeply impressive encounter that puts you on the ground with one of Africa’s most iconic species.

An optional activity is a canoe excursion through Lugogo Swamp, paddling quietly through papyrus channels in search of the extraordinary Shoebill Stork, one of Africa’s most ancient and sought-after birds, along with a rich variety of waterbirds and wetland wildlife. For those wanting even more after dark, an optional night game drive offers the chance to spot bushbabies, civets, porcupines, and other nocturnal species that come alive once the sun goes down.

Experience the raw power of Murchison Falls from both above and below

Day 4 – Scenic Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park and Top of the Falls

After breakfast, continue the journey north to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s oldest and largest protected area, covering over 3,840 square kilometres of savannah, woodland, and riverine forest. Check into your lodge on arrival and enjoy lunch with views over the savannah and the River Nile stretching into the distance. In the afternoon, transfer to the Top of the Falls, where the entire volume of the Nile is forced through a rocky gorge barely seven metres wide before plunging nearly 45 metres in a roaring, spray-drenched cascade.

Standing at the edge of this spectacle, with the thunder of the water below and the mist rising around you, is one of the most viscerally powerful moments in all of Uganda wildlife travel. Light snacks and refreshments are served as you take in the views from several vantage points along the trail. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner surrounded by the sounds of the wilderness.

Days 5: Game Drive and Nile River Boat Safari | Murchison Falls National Park

Rise early for a morning game drive across Murchison’s northern savannah, the park’s most wildlife-rich corridor, when the animals are at their most active and the golden light makes every sighting feel cinematic. Elephants move in great herds across the open plains, Rothschild’s giraffes browse the acacia tops, lions and leopards patrol their territories, and buffaloes, hartebeest, and Uganda kob fill the grassland in every direction. Your expert guide reads the landscape with precision, turning what could be an ordinary drive into a series of extraordinary close encounters.

After returning to the lodge for lunch, board a boat for an afternoon Nile River boat safari, gliding upstream past pods of hippos wallowing in the shallows, Nile crocodiles basking on the sandy banks, and elephants and buffaloes coming to drink at the water’s edge. The skies above fill with African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, herons, and dozens of other waterbird species. Light snacks and drinks are served on board as the afternoon light turns the river gold. This combination of land and water safari delivers the full breadth of Murchison’s remarkable wildlife in a single unforgettable day.

Day 6: Return to Entebbe | Scenic Drive or Domestic Flight

After breakfast, begin your journey back to Entebbe. Guests may choose between a short domestic flight of approximately one hour or a scenic overland drive of six to seven hours through the heart of Uganda. Those who choose the drive will stop for a relaxed lunch en route and have the opportunity to browse roadside craft shops where local artisans sell handmade baskets, carvings, and fabrics, offering a wonderful window into rural Ugandan life and the chance to pick up meaningful handcrafted pieces along the way. On arrival in Entebbe, the remainder of the day is yours at leisure. Rest at your hotel, enjoy a scenic dinner at one of Entebbe’s lakefront restaurants overlooking Lake Victoria, or explore at your own pace. This is a well-earned breath before the second and most extraordinary chapter of the journey begins tomorrow.

Day 7: Fly to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Buhoma Sector | Arrival, Pangolin Rescue Center and Afternoon at Leisure

This morning, board a scenic domestic flight to Kihihi Airstrip, with sweeping aerial views of Uganda’s highlands, forests, and valleys below. From the airstrip, transfer by road to your lodge in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. En route, you will make a stop at the Pangolin Rescue Center in Buhoma, one of the few facilities in Africa dedicated to the rehabilitation of the world’s most heavily trafficked mammal. An expert guide walks you through the fascinating biology and behavior of pangolins and the serious conservation challenges they face from habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade.

If conditions allow, you may have the rare opportunity to see rescued pangolins up close in a safe and controlled environment, a moving and eye-opening introduction to the wildlife conservation heart that beats throughout this region. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch, then spend the afternoon at your own pace, soaking in the extraordinary forest atmosphere and the sweeping views of one of Africa’s most ancient ecosystems.

For those wanting to connect further with the local community, an optional visit to Ride-4-A-Woman, a celebrated women-led cooperative offering hands-on workshops in basket weaving, tailoring, traditional cooking, and bicycle repair, is available during any free time throughout your stay in Bwindi.

Days 8: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest | A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter

This is the day that changes everything. Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is widely regarded as one of the most profound wildlife experiences on earth, and today it is yours.

Please note that gorilla trekking requires participants to be a minimum of 15 years of age. After an early breakfast, gather at park headquarters for a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers covering gorilla behavior, trekking protocols, and conservation history. Then, with your personal porter, experienced trackers, and expert ranger, you enter the ancient forest. The trek can take anywhere from three to six hours depending on the movement of the gorilla family assigned to your group, navigating terrain that ranges from manageable to genuinely challenging through a landscape of towering trees, tangled roots, and mist-drifted valleys alive with birdsong. And then the moment arrives. You step into a clearing and find yourself face to face with a wild mountain gorilla family.

For a full hour, you watch the silverback assert his quiet authority, mothers tend to their infants with extraordinary gentleness, and juveniles tumble and chase each other through the undergrowth just metres from where you stand. The eye contact alone will leave you speechless. Return to your lodge for a well-earned rest and a dinner that gives you time to reflect on one of the most humbling encounters of your life.

Day 9 – Batwa Community Tour and Local Artisan Gift Shop Visits | Indigenous Heritage of Bwindi

This morning brings one of the most joyful, moving, and genuinely fascinating days of the entire journey. Begin with a Batwa community tour, guided by elders of Uganda’s indigenous forest people who lived inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for thousands of years before the park was gazetted in 1991. Walk through a recreated forest village and take part in hands-on sessions covering fire-making using traditional methods, herbal medicine preparation, traditional hunting techniques, bush cooking, and storytelling, dance, and song passed down through countless generations.

The Batwa’s warmth, humor, and fierce pride in sharing their culture make this one of the most memorable experiences of the entire trip. This is a genuine and deeply respectful exchange with one of Africa’s oldest living cultures, and every visit directly supports Batwa community empowerment and cultural preservation. The afternoon is spent exploring the local artisan gift shops around Buhoma, where you will find a wonderful selection of handcrafted baskets, wood carvings, woven textiles, jewelry, and traditional artwork made by talented local artisans. Every purchase puts money directly into the hands of the community and brings home a meaningful piece of the story you have lived on this journey.

Check the optional activities section below for additional ways to enrich your final evening in the forest.

Days 10 and 11 – Return to Entebbe, Shoebill Trek, and International Departure

After breakfast on Day 10, transfer to Kihihi Airstrip for your scenic return flight to Entebbe, with breathtaking aerial views of Uganda’s highlands, forests, and lakes on the way. On arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel.

Depending on your energy and flight schedule, your final included activity is a Shoebill Stork canoe excursion through Mabamba Swamp, paddling quietly through dense papyrus channels on the shores of Lake Victoriain search of the extraordinary prehistoric Shoebill Stork, one of Uganda’s most celebrated birdwatching experiences. Afterwards, enjoy a freshly grilled fish lunch by the shores of Lake Victoria or browse local artisan shops for final handcrafted souvenirs before a relaxed evening at your hotel.

Best Time for This Tour:

This 11-day Uganda luxury safari visits Ziwa Rhino Ranch, Murchison Falls National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Each destination responds differently to Uganda’s seasons.

June to September (long dry season): The best overall time. Game drives at Murchison Falls are outstanding with animals concentrated near water. Rhino trekking at Ziwa is easier in drier grassland. Bwindi trails are firmer and the gorilla trek more comfortable. Gorilla trekking permits for this period must be booked 4 to 6 months in advance.

December to February (short dry season): Excellent alternative with dry trails across all destinations. Strong game viewing at Murchison. Gorilla sightings year-round. Good value option compared to peak season.

March to May (long rainy season): Bwindi is lush and green. Gorilla sightings are unaffected by rain. Murchison Falls remains excellent for game viewing. Ziwa Rhino Ranch is accessible year-round. Lowest pricing of the year with fewer visitors.

October to November (short rainy season): Similar to the long rains. Good value and quieter across all parks. Bwindi is particularly dramatic in the rains. The Batwa community tour and Pangolin Rescue Center visit are completely unaffected by weather.
