Walking with WIldlife Adventures

Day 1 –Arrival in Entebbe, Uganda | Welcome to the Pearl of Africa

Your Uganda safari adventure begins the moment you land at Entebbe International Airport, set on the shores of Lake Victoria. A dedicated Back to the Source Tours representative will be there to welcome you, assist with arrival formalities, and transfer you privately to your hotel. Once settled in, you will receive a personal briefing covering your full itinerary, key highlights, and everything you need to know before the journey begins. Enjoy a relaxed dinner nearby, rest well, and let the anticipation build. Tomorrow you walk with wildlife.

Day 2 – Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park | Guided Walking Safari and Equator Crossing

After breakfast, set off westward toward Lake Mburo National Park, a compact and captivating gem of rolling hills, acacia woodlands, open savannah, and sparkling lakes located just four hours from Entebbe. En route, make an exciting stop at the Equator crossing, where you can watch water spin in opposite directions in each hemisphere, stand with one foot in the northern and one in the southern hemisphere, and take those iconic photos that never get old. It is a fun, fascinating, and genuinely educational moment that sets the adventurous tone for everything ahead.

On arrival at the park, check into your lodge and head straight out for a guided walking safari, one of the most thrilling ways to experience wildlife in all of Uganda. Lake Mburo is one of the very few national parks in the country where walking alongside animals is permitted, and the experience of moving through the bush on foot changes everything. With an armed ranger leading the way, you will spot giraffes browsing the acacia tops, zebras grazing across open plains, buffaloes, impalas, elands, bushbucks, warthogs, and waterbucks at a proximity that no game drive vehicle can match. Every sound, every footprint, and every rustle in the grass becomes part of the story. Spend the evening at the lodge watching wildlife gather around the waterholes as the sun goes down over the Ankole cattle kraals.

Day 3 – Morning Game Drive at Lake Mburo and Transfer to Emburara Farm Lodge

Rise early for a morning game drive across Lake Mburo’s diverse terrain, when the wildlife is at its most active and the light is perfect for photography. Keep your eyes open for hippos along the lake shores, crocodiles basking on the banks, topis, reedbucks, and the always-entertaining warthogs trotting through the grass.

After breakfast, begin the transfer to Emburara Farm Lodge near Mbarara, a remarkable eco-luxury property set on a working farm where Ankole longhorn cattle roam the land and the pace of life slows to something deeply restorative. Arrive in time for a warm farm-style welcome and a sunset over the sweeping farmlands and kraals that will remind you exactly why Uganda earns the name the Pearl of Africa.

Day 4 – Farmer for a Day | Ankole Culture and Farm Life at Emburara

Today is one of the most unique and genuinely joyful days of the entire journey, a full “Farmer for a Day” experience at Emburara Farm Lodge that puts you right in the middle of Ugandan rural and pastoral life. The day begins with herding the iconic Ankole longhorn cattle, one of Africa’s most distinctive and culturally significant livestock breeds, following the rhythms that local pastoralist families have lived by for centuries. From there, try your hand at milking by hand, help with collecting firewood, and join a traditional firewood cooking session preparing authentic Ugandan dishes from scratch.

The day also includes banana beer brewing, a visit to the herbal garden where your guide explains the medicinal and culinary uses of indigenous plants, and storytelling sessions about Ankole culture, traditions, and the deep bond between the people and their cattle. End the day with a bonfire under the stars, a moment of stillness and warmth after a day that connects you to Uganda in a way that no game drive ever could.

Day 5 –Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Evening Game Drive

After a relaxed breakfast on the farm, set off toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most visited wildlife destination and one of the most biodiverse protected areas on the African continent. The park’s remarkable variety of ecosystems, from open savannah and dense forest to crater lakes and the broad Kazinga Channel waterway, supports an extraordinary range of wildlife.

Check into your lodge on arrival and head straight out for a sunset game drive across the Kasenyi Plains, one of the park’s most productive wildlife corridors. Watch elephants moving across the open ground, lions and leopards resting in the fading light, warthogs trotting back to their burrows, Uganda kob, waterbucks, and buffaloes grazing as the sky turns gold, and hyenas beginning their evening patrol. This is Queen Elizabeth at its most atmospheric, and it sets the perfect tone for a full day in the park tomorrow.

Day 6 – Mongoose Project and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

Start the morning with a fascinating visit to the Mongoose Research Project, one of the longest-running wildlife behavioral studies in Africa. Rangers and researchers have tracked individual mongoose families for years and can introduce you to animals they know by name, personality, and social rank. It is a rare and captivating window into the science of animal behavior and the wildlife conservation work happening right here in the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

After a relaxed lunch at the lodge, board a boat for the celebrated Kazinga Channel cruise, one of the greatest wildlife boat safaris in Uganda. This broad natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward hosts one of the highest concentrations of hippos anywhere in Africa. Nile crocodiles line the sandy banks, elephants and buffaloes come to drink at the water’s edge, and the skies fill with African skimmers, saddle-billed storks, fish eagles, herons, and pied kingfishers. Drinks and snacks are served on board as the afternoon light turns the water gold. Be sure to check the optional activities section below for additional ways to make the most of your time in the park.

Day 7 – Scenic Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Buhoma Sector | Gateway to the Gorillas

After breakfast, begin the scenic drive toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse and ancient rainforests on earth. The road winds through terraced hillsides, vibrant roadside markets, and sweeping valley views as you descend into the highlands of southwestern Uganda, a landscape of extraordinary beauty that grows more dramatic with every kilometer.

Arrive in the Buhoma sector by afternoon, check into your eco-lodge, and take a moment to breathe in the forest air and absorb the extraordinary setting. The ancient trees, mist-covered ridges, and sounds of the forest around you are already a world apart. Rest well tonight. Tomorrow brings the most powerful day of the entire journey.

Day 8 – Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi | A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter

This is the day that changes everything. Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the rarest and most profound wildlife experiences on earth, and today it is yours. Please note that gorilla trekking requires participants to be a minimum of 15 years of age.

After an early breakfast, gather at park headquarters for a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers on gorilla behavior, forest protocols, and conservation history. Then, with your personal porter, experienced trackers, and expert guide, you enter the ancient forest.

The trek can take anywhere from two to six hours depending on the movement of the gorilla family assigned to your group, moving through dense vegetation, tangled roots, and mist-drifted valleys alive with birdsong. When you find them, you will spend a full hour watching the silverback maintain his quiet authority, mothers tend to their infants with extraordinary gentleness, and juveniles tumble and play just metres from where you stand. The eye contact alone will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Return to your lodge for a well-earned lunch and a relaxed evening to reflect on one of the most humbling encounters of your life. Check the optional activities section below for additional ways to enrich your final evening in Bwindi.

Day 9 – Batwa Community Tour and Return to Entebbe

The final morning in Bwindi is a celebration of the people who have called this forest home for thousands of years. Begin with a Batwa community tour, guided by elders of Uganda’s indigenous forest people who lived inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for generations before the park was gazetted in 1991.

Walk through a recreated forest village and take part in hands-on sessions covering fire-making using traditional methods, herbal medicine preparation, traditional hunting techniques, and storytelling, dance, and song passed down through countless generations. Try your hand at shooting a traditional bow and arrow or making fire without matches alongside people whose connection to this forest runs deeper than any history book can capture. The Batwa’s warmth, humor, and fierce pride in sharing their culture make this one of the most memorable and joyful experiences of the entire trip. Every visit directly supports Batwa community empowerment and cultural preservation.

After the tour, spend time browsing the local artisan gift shops around Buhoma, where you will find a wonderful selection of handcrafted baskets, wood carvings, woven textiles, jewelry, and traditional artwork made by talented local artisans. Every purchase puts money directly into the hands of the community. Enjoy a final lunch at your lodgesurrounded by the sights and sounds of the forest before transferring to Kihihi Airstrip for your scenic return flight to Entebbe.

Please note that this itinerary is designed around an evening departure flight from Entebbe. If your international flight departs the following day, we are happy to organize an additional overnight stay in Entebbe so you can depart fully rested.

Alternatively, if you prefer an early arrival at the airport, you may choose to skip the Batwa Community Tour and take the early morning flight from Kihihi, which puts you at Entebbe International Airport comfortably within the morning hours. Your Back to the Source Tours representative will help you plan the option that works best for your schedule.

Best Time for This Tour

This 9-day walking safari Uganda visits four distinct ecosystems across the country. Each responds differently to Uganda’s seasons.

June to September (long dry season): The best overall time. Walking safari conditions at Lake Mburo are excellent with lower vegetation and easier wildlife spotting. Game drives at Queen Elizabeth are outstanding. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise is at its best with animals concentrated at the water. Gorilla trekking permits for this period must be booked at least 6 months in advance.

December to February (short dry season): Excellent alternative with dry trails across all destinations. Strong wildlife sightings at Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth. Bwindi trails are firmer and more comfortable. Good option for travelers who cannot travel during the June to September peak.

March to May (long rainy season): Trails at Lake Mburo and in Bwindi are muddier. The walking safari is more challenging but remains possible. Wildlife sightings at Queen Elizabeth are unaffected. Gorilla sightings are year-round regardless of rain. Fewer visitors mean a more private experience.

October to November (short rainy season): Similar to the long rains. Good value and quieter. The Emburara Farm Lodge experience and Batwa community tour are completely unaffected by weather. Bwindi is particularly lush and dramatic during the rains.
